Coffee Shops in Amsterdam
Depending on their influence on human health the Dutch have divided drugs into the groups of soft drugs and hard drugs. Hard drugs as cocaine, LSD, morphine, heroin are forbidden in the Netherlands as in any other country.
Soft drugs as cannabis in all its forms (marijuana, hashish, hash oil) and hallucinogenic mushrooms (so called magic mushrooms or paddos – from Dutch: paddestoel – mushroom) are legal under condition of so called “personal use”. However the sell of most of magic mushrooms (also known as hallucinogenic mushrooms or paddos), has been forbidden since November 1, 2008
Under Dutch drug law, coffee shops are allowed to sell a maximum of five grams of cannabis per person aged 18 years or older, providing identification.
Coffee shops are not allowed to sell alcohol. No coffee shops permit the use of hard drugs and you will find yourself ejected quite quickly should you try to test this.
Coffee shops are not allowed to advertise
Technically is it not allowed to smoke weed on the street or in open and public space. If you are caught by a police man you will be warned.
Most coffee shops have a weed menu, from which customers can make a selection. You will then be presented with a plastic bag with your marijuana or hash inside and are free to leave with it or smoke it on the premises. Many coffee shops also have a sealed ‘smoking area’ in order to allow customers to smoke joints containing Customers are welcome to smoke their own weed in coffee shops too, though in this case you will be expected to purchase a drink or something as a courtesy.

A spacious touristy coffee shop just off Damrak towards red lights, with a terrace in summer, plus a bar and restaurant upstairs.
♦ Bulldog -Red Light District
Generally recognised as the first coffeeshop in Amsterdam. Being in the heart of the Red Light District, the view is interesting too.
♦ Bulldog – Leidseplein
Probably the best known coffeeshop in Amsterdam. It’s a big place right on the Leidseplein square in a building that was once a police station.
♦ The Rookies
A unique coffee shop located just off Leidseplein. the Rookies has a woody cafe-bar feel to it. It’s a fairly large room with plenty of tables and chairs.
