Night Life in Amsterdam
For party people, there are plenty of clubs in Amsterdam that offer wild, fun or classy nights out. Whether you’re looking to dance the night away, drink or meet someone, the nightclubs in Amsterdam have got you covered. Well known and popular clubs are centred in the following areas:
RembrandtpleinRembrandtplein is lined with pubs, restaurants and cafes and it’s a popular centre for quality night clubs. Around the borders of the square there are traditional Dutch pubs which play real Dutch music, the chic and classy Club Rain and Escape, both of which are great choices to dance the night away and show of your latest designer fashions. More casual clubbers might find Studio 80 and its dedicated genre music nights of interest, while the cheap and cheerful Club Smokey across the square plays the hits. Those looking for Amsterdam gay clubs will find the nearby Reguliersdwarsstraat the place to be, while Amstel on the other side of the square plays host to an ever diminishing number of gay clubs and cafés.
LeidsepleinThe Leidseplein or Leidse-square is one of Amsterdam’s most popular centres for nightlife and shopping. Much of Amsterdam’s nightlife centres around Leidseplein and the streets nearby. Famous music venues such as Melkweg and Paradiso can be found here, while Irish pubs, brown cafés and smaller nightclubs line the square and the streets radiating off it. Sugar Factory sitting directly opposite Melkweg, offers a more youthful and energetic take on the jazz scene. Jimmy Woo, just off Leidseplein at Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 18, is the often called most stylish club to visit in the city. Its reputation as a place where the beautiful people go to party is well deserved and the odd celebrity can be seen strutting their stuff here at VIP events and after-parties.
SpuistraatBitterzoet, a short walk away at Spuistraat 2, also hosts a number of music nights, with either DJs or live bands performing a mixture of funk, soul, house and even modern jazz music. Dansen bij Jansen, close to Spui at Handboogstraat 11, is the most popular club for Amsterdam students.
Red Light DistrictCasa Rosso, Moulin Rouge and Banana Bar are the most infamous live sex theatres in the Amsterdam Red Light District. The venues here are larger and cleaner than for many other sex shows. The atmosphere of Casa Rosso is much friendlier to women than in other sex shows, including the Banana Bar, and you will often find groups of girls or couples among the audience.
Cafe Casablanca can be found just outside the Red Light District at Zeedijk 24 and has been a fixture of Amsterdam’s jazz scene since 1945. The cruise club Fuxx at Warmoesstraat 96 has replaced the legendary club Cockring and also offers regular nights with a focus on fetish parties.
